ANGERS
Capital of the Anjou region, Angers is situated in the heart of the Loire Valley, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Angers not only enjoys an exceptional setting but also has an extraordinarily rich heritage and a special ‘art de vivre’, with a strong gastronomic tradition and fine wines.
Heritage and culture
The city appeals to the visitors not only for its remarkable historic district but also for its vibrant pedestrian streets, an inescapable rendez-vous for shopping fans.
Regarding the city’s entertainment, the Place du Ralliement is a good spot to linger on the cafés terraces in the shade of the Italian-style theatre!
Make the most of the magnificent viewpoint over the Maine river from the “Chateau d’Angers», the most heavily fortified and imposing castle in the Loire valley. It houses the monumental Apocalypse tapestry, the largest medieval tapestry in the world.
Angers is also an important centre of contemporary tapestry with the Jean Lurçat and modern tapestry Museum. Other outstanding museums such as the Fine Arts museum and the David d’Angers gallery are well worth a visit too.
The rich heritage around Angers also finds its expression in many castles, churches, mills. A lot of castles can be visited around Angers: Brissac (17th C.), Montgeoffroy (XVIIIème), Plessis-Bourré (XVème), Serrant (XVI-XVIII).
Nature and discovery
Angers, the European capital city for sustainable development, is regularly under the media spotlights for its quality of life. The city has successfully combined urban development with environmental quality (more than 40m² of green space per inhabitant).
Just near Angers, the Loire river is one of the great UNESCO world heritage sites. With the “Lower Angevine Valleys” nearby, nature embraces the city right into its heart with its many public gardens. On foot, on a bicycle, or by canoe, the countryside is always close by and the rivers are accessible from the Angers harbour, providing many possibilities of active holidays such as L’Ile Saint-Aubin, Le Bassin de la Maine, 2 new “Loire à vélo” sections around Angers.
Art of living and special events
In the streets of Angers, the soft Loire Valley light illuminates the restored tufa stone buildings and invites to a leisurely stroll. The street is also the site of several performances during the year with many quality festivals: Premiers Plans (first film festival), le Festival d’Anjou (theatre), Angers l’Été (concerts), les Accroche-Cœurs (street art festival), the Festival of Scoop and Journalism, and Soleils d’Hiver (Christmas market).
Gastronomy and the diversity of local wines also account for the renowned art of living in and around Angers. In the heart of the 3rd largest wine region in France, Anjou counts 29 AOC fine wines (ie. Coteaux de l’Aubanc). Wine estates can be visited year-round. The taste of Cointreau orange liqueur is internationally appreciated as well as the Giffard specialities like Pastille mint drops or Guignolet. In this region of slate (ardoise) you can savour Quernons d’Ardoise, surprising blue chocolates, whose shape and colour remind the slates that are still used for the roofs in Anjou.

600th Anniversary of the birth of King René
2009 – throughout January
Throughout 2009, more than 10 sites in and around Anjou, will host a wide range of special events as testimony to the many facets of King René’s character.
In Angers, an exhibition of virtual images will illustrate what the château looked like in the 15th century. Visitors will discover the château buildings, passageways, the colourfully painted walls and the ever-present gardens. In May, the château is holding a large exhibition dedicated to the life and work of King René who was born here in January 1409. Staged in the royal apartments, the exhibition will evoke “the king in his château” and will focus on his life as a great prince, a benefactor of the arts and sciences, a ruler, a nomadic king and his private life in the bed chamber and study.
