SAINT-ETIENNE
The seven hills around the famous green vest and design make this appealing city resolutely modern and dynamic. Saint Etienne is a vibrant heart of an urban area with a privileged position in the midst of a preserved natural environment such as the Loire Gorges and the Pilat Regional Nature Park that make the city so attractive. Towards the end of the 18th century the arms manufacture was the main activity. In the 19th century the town developed rapidly and coal mining reached its peak; metallurgy, bicycle and ribbon factories constituted the three other pillars of Saint-Etienne’s industry.
Nowadays, with the transformation of the town’s image due to urban renovation, Saint-Etienne is classified as a “Town of Art and History” and tackles interest.
Modern Art and Design, especially, the Design centre and the Biennial of Design event, the Zenith Architecture design by Norman Foster and the Le Corbusier site offer a large range of curiosities. The famous Geoffroy Guichard Stadium also belongs to the town’s heritage and can be visited.
Not to be missed to visit also: The Museum of Modern Art, one of the greatest national and international institutions, specialised in modern and contemporary art collections and exhibitions. The Museum of Art and Industry ranges from the history of ribbons and weapons to bicycle manufacturing. The Puits Couriot Coal Mining Museum offers a tour into a mine gallery and other places relating the miner’s work and their lives on the site of one of the largest extraction centres.
Saint-Etienne is a great place for sports, leisure and cultural entertainment and for surprising discoveries.
